What NOT to Pack: Tips from a Moving Company

September 27, 2014 By Tibor

Europa_slider_delivery-badgesWhether you’re planning to move house on your own or hire a moving company, moving can be an excellent excuse to purge a lot of items that you could likely do without. However, many people love to hold on to everything they own for years and years, without so much as looking at many of these things even once.
To help you get a fresh start in your new home, here are a few tips on what not to pack when moving.

Things an Experienced Moving Company Suggests You Should Leave Behind

  1. Unpacked Boxes
Almost everyone has a box or two that hasn’t been opened since the last time you moved. Unless it’s filled with collector’s items worth a ton of money – you can probably get rid of the entire box. If you haven’t opened it yet, do you really think you will anytime soon?
  2. Things That Don’t Fit
In size, taste or style. If you haven’t worn that pair of jeans in 3 years, or you have some old décor items in a box from when you redecorated the living room, why are you keeping them? Send them to a thrift shop where someone might actually get use out of them.
  3. Food and Cleaning Supplies
As you’re getting ready to move, do your best to use up all your frozen and canned food, and buy only the bare minimum of cleaning supplies. Then, just before the moving company shows up on moving day, get rid of what’s left. Frozen food can go bad during the move, and canned food and cleaning supplies only create more work. Donate it to your local food bank.
  4. Magazines and Books
Whether home or office moving, books and magazines make for some very heavy lifting. Do you really need those stacks of old magazines? Are you really going to read that book again? Be very selective about which books you take, and give the rest to friends or a used book shop.
  5. Unfinished Projects
Yeah, yeah… you meant to sew those curtains and build that shelving unit – but two years have passed and the materials still lay untouched in the basement. Don’t move them to your new place. Chances are, you’re never going to get around to doing the project.
