Summer packing tips for planning a relocation in the 2025 high season

May 5, 2025 By Rod

Summer packing tips for planning a relocation in the 2025 high season

Summer packing tips are essential for anyone preparing to move during the busy 2025 high season, especially in a vibrant city like Toronto. Summer is not only the most popular time to relocate across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Ontario, but it’s also when the heat, humidity, and rush can turn an already challenging process into a stressful one. Whether you’re packing up a small condo or a large family home, knowing how to prepare efficiently for a summer move makes all the difference.

At Europa Moving, based in Toronto, we’ve helped thousands of families, individuals, and businesses successfully relocate during the summer peak. Our experience has taught us that packing correctly is just as important as the move itself. With the right strategy and supplies, you can avoid damage, stay organized, and keep your cool—literally and figuratively—throughout the process.

Why Summer Packing Needs a Different Approach

Packing for a summer move in Toronto is different from moving in cooler months. The heat, the increased demand for moving services, and the tighter scheduling windows all add complexity. That’s why we’ve created these summer packing tips to help you stay ahead of the game and protect your belongings, no matter how far you’re going.

Whether you’re moving within the city, across the GTA, or relocating elsewhere in Canada, these tips are designed to help you beat the heat and move smarter—not harder.

Top Summer Packing Tips for 2025

1. Start Early and Pack in Stages

One of the best summer packing tips is to begin as soon as your move is confirmed. Avoid the rush by packing a few boxes every day leading up to your moving date. This reduces last-minute stress and gives you time to sort through items you may not want to bring.

Start with seasonal and non-essential items—like winter clothes, books, and decor—then gradually move to everyday items.

2. Declutter and Downsize

The less you pack, the less you move. Summer is a great time to clear out items you no longer use. Sell, donate, or recycle anything that doesn’t need to follow you to your next home. Not only does this save time and space, but it also helps reduce moving costs.

Europa Moving offers guidance on how to organize your items effectively before packing even begins.

3. Pack Heat-Sensitive Items Separately

Summer heat can damage certain items—electronics, candles, vinyl records, makeup, and perishable food are particularly vulnerable. Make sure to pack these items separately, and consider transporting them in your personal vehicle if they can’t be kept cool.

Label boxes clearly with “heat-sensitive” or “do not stack” to alert movers.

4. Use Quality Materials and Pack Smart

High temperatures can weaken low-quality tape and boxes. Invest in sturdy, double-walled boxes, strong packing tape, and protective wrapping for fragile items.

Use small boxes for heavy items like books and large boxes for lighter items like bedding and clothes. Always distribute weight evenly and cushion fragile belongings with packing paper or bubble wrap.

5. Label Everything Clearly

Use large, legible labels on every box. Include the room destination, a general list of contents, and handling instructions if needed. This helps you stay organized and speeds up the unpacking process once you arrive.

Color-coded labels or stickers can further streamline the process, especially when you’re dealing with a large home or office move.

Special Considerations for Toronto Summer Moves

Toronto summers can be hot, humid, and fast-paced—especially during the high moving season. Here are a few extra summer packing tips specific to the Toronto and GTA area:

  • Stay Hydrated and Cool – Keep water bottles, cold towels, and a fan nearby while packing. Heat exhaustion is a real risk during long, hot packing days.
  • Avoid Packing on the Day of Your Move – Have everything packed and ready to go at least 24 hours before moving day. Last-minute packing in summer heat can lead to fatigue and disorganization.
  • Use Early Morning or Late Afternoon Windows – If you’re doing any heavy lifting or transporting items yourself, avoid the peak heat hours of the day.

The Most Common Items To Store When Moving

April 6, 2025 By Rod

The Most Common Items To Store When Moving

Europa Moving and Storage – Trusted Movers and Storage Experts in Toronto and the GTA

Moving to a new home is always an exciting experience, but it also comes with plenty of stress and logistics. Whether you’re relocating within Toronto, moving to a new condo across the GTA, or planning a larger move across Ontario, figuring out what to take immediately—and what can wait—is a key part of the process. That’s where temporary storage solutions come in handy.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we specialize in both moving and storage services tailored for people and families throughout Toronto, Ontario, and the Greater Toronto Area. Over the years, we’ve noticed common trends when it comes to the items to store when moving, and in this blog, we’ll explore those frequently stored items—and why people choose to store them during a move.

Why Store Items During a Move?

Storing items during a move can make the process much smoother and more flexible. Some of the most common reasons our Toronto clients choose to store items include:

  • A gap between move-out and move-in dates
  • Downsizing to a smaller home or condo
  • Renovations at the new property
  • Staging the old home for sale
  • Needing time to sort, sell, or donate items later

No matter your reason, understanding the most practical items to store when moving can help you make smarter decisions and reduce the stress of your move.

1. Seasonal Items

Toronto weather comes with four distinct seasons, so it’s no surprise that many movers store seasonal items that aren’t needed right away.

Common examples include:

  • Winter jackets and boots (during a summer move)
  • Holiday decorations
  • Snow shovels or summer patio sets
  • Space heaters or fans

By storing these seasonal items, you can free up space in your new home and unpack more efficiently based on what you need first.

2. Large Furniture

Bulky items like couches, beds, dining tables, and bookshelves often top the list of items to store when moving—especially for those moving into smaller spaces or temporary housing.

Common reasons to store large furniture:

  • Downsizing or transitioning to a condo
  • Uncertainty about room layouts or design
  • Protecting furniture during renovations
  • Delaying delivery until after painting or flooring is complete

At Europa Moving and Storage, we carefully wrap and protect all furniture before placing it in our secure, temperature-protected Toronto storage facility.

3. Sentimental Belongings

Not everything you move is immediately essential—but it might still carry emotional value. Things like photo albums, heirlooms, and childhood memorabilia are often stored safely until there’s time and space to revisit them.

Reasons to store sentimental items:

  • You’re not sure where they’ll fit in the new space
  • You want to protect them during the move
  • You plan to pass them down later

Storage gives you time to make thoughtful decisions without rushing or risking damage.

4. Extra Clothing and Linens

When moving in a hurry, not everyone takes the time to sort through all their closets. That’s why extra clothing, bedding, and towels are frequently included in the items to store when moving.

This is especially true if:

  • You’re moving in summer and want to store winter gear
  • You have duplicates you plan to donate later
  • You’re transitioning to a smaller closet space

Rather than cluttering your new home, temporary storage lets you sort at your own pace.

5. Appliances and Electronics

From fridges and microwaves to televisions and stereo systems, appliances are another top category of items to store when moving.

You might need to store them if:

  • Your new home comes with built-in appliances
  • You’re moving temporarily or into shared housing
  • Renovations make it unsafe to plug them in right away

Our team at Europa Moving and Storage ensures these items are unplugged, cleaned, and safely stored in a controlled environment until you’re ready.

6. Kids’ Toys and Furniture

When you’re moving with children, it can be overwhelming to unpack everything all at once—especially if their new room isn’t set up yet. That’s why many families store:

  • Extra toys or books
  • Cribs, bunk beds, or playsets
  • Outgrown clothing and gear to pass on later

Storing non-essentials helps families get settled with less chaos and more space.

7. Office Equipment and Files

With more people working from home in Toronto and the GTA, we’re seeing an increase in home office-related items to store when moving:

  • Desks and office chairs
  • Filing cabinets
  • Computer equipment and accessories
  • Archived paperwork

If your new place doesn’t yet have a dedicated office space, storage provides a temporary solution.

How to Choose What to Store

If you’re not sure what should go into storage, ask yourself:

  • Will I need this within the first few weeks of moving?
  • Do I have a place for this in the new home?
  • Am I keeping this for practical or sentimental reasons?
  • Is this item at risk of being damaged during renovations?

If the answer points to storing it, you’ll likely benefit from using a secure, local storage provider like Europa Moving and Storage.

Why Choose Europa Moving and Storage?

As a Toronto-based company with years of experience, Europa Moving and Storage provides full-service moving and storage solutions throughout Ontario and the GTA.

Here’s why customers trust us with their items to store when moving:

✔️ Clean, secure, and temperature-controlled storage facilities
✔️ Convenient pickup, packing, and delivery services

The Importance of Disassembling and Reassembling Large Furniture for Moving

March 17, 2025 By Rod

The Importance of Disassembling and Reassembling Large Furniture for Moving

Moving can be stressful, especially when dealing with heavy, oversized furniture. Whether you’re relocating within Toronto, Ontario, or the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), ensuring that your furniture is moved safely and efficiently is crucial. One of the best ways to make the process easier is by disassembling and reassembling large furniture.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we specialize in professional moving services, including handling bulky furniture. Our experienced team ensures that your furniture is taken apart and reassembled correctly, making your move smooth and stress-free.

Why Disassembling and Reassembling Large Furniture Is Important

Many people assume they can move large furniture as-is, but this can lead to problems such as damage, difficulty maneuvering, and unnecessary delays. Here’s why disassembling and reassembling large furniture is an essential step in the moving process:

1. Prevents Damage to Furniture and Property

Large furniture pieces like beds, wardrobes, sofas, and dining tables can be difficult to maneuver through tight doorways, hallways, and staircases. If not handled properly, they can get scratched, dented, or even broken.

✔ Disassembling furniture reduces the risk of damage by making each piece easier to move.
✔ Smaller components are less likely to hit walls, door frames, or floors.
✔ Furniture remains intact and in perfect condition for reassembly at the new location.

At Europa Moving, we take special care to protect both your furniture and your home during the moving process in Toronto and the GTA.

2. Makes Moving Safer

Moving heavy furniture without disassembling it can pose safety risks. Lifting and carrying large pieces can cause injuries, especially if they are not handled properly.

✔ Disassembling furniture reduces weight and makes it easier to transport.
✔ Professional movers use proper lifting techniques to prevent strain and injury.
✔ Securely wrapping and padding furniture components prevents sharp edges from causing accidents.

By choosing Europa Moving and Storage, you can rest assured that our trained movers will handle everything safely and professionally.

3. Maximizes Space in the Moving Truck

A moving truck has limited space, and efficiently utilizing that space is key to a successful move. Large, bulky furniture takes up unnecessary room and can leave less space for other belongings.

✔ Disassembled furniture can be packed more compactly, allowing for better truck organization.
✔ Proper arrangement prevents furniture from shifting during transit, reducing damage risk.
✔ More items can fit in one truckload, reducing the need for multiple trips.

At Europa Moving, we ensure that your items are efficiently loaded for a smooth move across Toronto, Ontario, and the GTA.

Which Furniture Items Should Be Disassembled for Moving?

Not all furniture needs to be taken apart, but certain large items should always be disassembled before a move. These include:

✔ Bed Frames and Headboards – Large beds, especially king and queen-sized, should be taken apart to fit through doorways.
✔ Dining Tables – Removing legs from tables makes them easier to transport.
✔ Sofas and Sectionals – Oversized sofas and sectionals should be broken down into smaller sections.
✔ Desks and Office Furniture – L-shaped desks or large office setups should be disassembled for easy transport.
✔ Wardrobes and Dressers – Heavy, solid wood furniture should be taken apart to avoid excessive weight and damage.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we assess each piece of furniture and determine the best way to disassemble and transport it efficiently.

How to Properly Disassemble and Reassemble Large Furniture

Professional movers follow a structured process to ensure disassembling and reassembling large furniture is done correctly. Here’s how we handle it at Europa Moving:

Step 1: Take Measurements

Before disassembling anything, we measure the furniture and the doorways, hallways, and staircases to determine if it needs to be taken apart.

Step 2: Gather the Right Tools

Having the right tools makes the process faster and safer. Our movers use:
✔ Screwdrivers and Allen wrenches for removing bolts and screws.
✔ Labeling tape and bags to keep track of small parts.
✔ Protective blankets and wrap to safeguard furniture pieces.

Step 3: Disassemble the Furniture

✔ Remove legs, drawers, or detachable sections.
✔ Keep screws and small parts in labeled bags to prevent losing them.
✔ Wrap each section carefully for transport.

Step 4: Load the Moving Truck Securely

✔ Place heavy furniture at the back of the truck for stability.
✔ Secure pieces with moving straps to prevent shifting.
✔ Use moving blankets to avoid scratches or damage.

Step 5: Reassemble at the New Location

✔ Follow labeled instructions to put everything back together.
✔ Ensure all screws, bolts, and parts are secured properly.
✔ Position furniture exactly where the customer wants it.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we handle the entire process for you, making sure everything is reassembled perfectly in your new home in Toronto or the GTA.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Moving Large Furniture

❌ Skipping the disassembly step and trying to move large pieces in one piece.
❌ Forgetting to label parts, making reassembly difficult.
❌ Not using the right tools, leading to stripped screws or broken furniture.
❌ Dragging furniture instead of lifting it, which can damage floors.

Avoid these mistakes by hiring professionals like Europa Moving, who have the experience and tools to move your furniture safely and efficiently.

Why Choose Europa Moving and Storage

✔ Expert Furniture Disassembly and Reassembly – We ensure all items are moved safely and put back together properly.
✔ Fully Equipped Moving Team – We use professional tools, blankets, and padding for maximum protection.

Useful Tips for Moving Your Plants in Toronto, ON

July 4, 2017 By Tibor

We prepared some tips to ensure that when you move your plants to or from Toronto, ON or elsewhere in Canada, they arrive at your new home safely, and that you don’t lose those great memories associated with your old home:

• Move at the right time – Try and move your plants either at the start or end of the summer, as the dryness can often stress plants and make re-planting them very difficult.

Dry summers aren’t usually too common in Canada, but it might not be worth taking the risk, so planning your move for the spring or autumn is a good idea.

Moving with Plants in Toronto - Toronto Plants Moving

• Do some research – There are often unique problems that arise when moving plants, mainly due to their status as living things. Firstly, check with your Toronto movers as to whether they can assist with moving your plants, some Toronto movers don’t have policies that allow for this. Secondly, be aware of long distance/cross country moves, as moving plants across international borders can be tricky and there are often strict regulations that can make this a tough process.

• Move smaller plants by yourself – For small house plants – we recommend moving them in your car. Not only will it reduce the stress of wondering whether your Toronto moving company will treat the plants correctly, but you can also watch and maintain them more closely.

• Prepare for outdoor plants – It’s important to plan carefully, especially when moving outdoor plants. Try to prepare the planting site before you arrive, so that as soon as you get there you can plant your favourite tree.

Also, bring along some water to keep the roots moist during the trip.

• Observe the changes – There’s nothing worse than arriving at a new garden and finding that it doesn’t fit the needs of your plants. Make sure to observe the soil quality and use plenty of plant food and water to help them adjust. Also observe the new climate, certain plants may not fair well in certain temperatures.

Finally, we recommend observing the air quality in your new home’s area.

• Damage Control – There’s a variety of steps you can take to maintain the general health of the plants prior to the move.

Firstly, you can trim back any foliage that you think may interfere with the moving process and risk snagging the plant. You can also tie back any crucial branches or leaves that stick out to further prevent snagging or branches breaking. Finally, it’s a good idea to treat your plants for pests and diseases before moving, this will help you start your new garden without any worries of infecting other plants.

So, there’s many factors you’ll need to consider when moving your plants. And if the tips above are followed carefully, moving your plants should be a breeze.

Checklist for Day Before Moving in Toronto ON

June 19, 2017 By Tibor

When you get closer to the day before your moving in Toronto, ON or elsewhere in Canada, you’ll probably have had your share of checklists: items to pack, items not to pack, things to do 12 weeks before move etc.

How to Prepare Moving Checklist - Movers Toronto

While the most important moving checklist is your Moving Day Checklist, your Day Before Moving Checklist is also quite important. Without it, you’re likely to wake up on your moving day in panic with all that has to be done. But with a day before list full of check marks, you’ll spring out of bed ready to take on your move!

Prepare your Day Before Moving Checklist based on your move’s specifics and include anything you haven’t yet gotten around to. And you may want to consider these additions:

  • Remove pictures, mirrors and wall hangings from the walls.
  • Build your Do Not Pack pile, putting suitcases and things you’ll be taking with you, in a corner clearly marked for movers and packers to steer clear of.
  • Create a folder or a binder to keep your household inventory, checklists (including this one), and all other important papers.
  • Contact your moving company to check, double check and triple check that everyone is on schedule.
  • Secure cash, jewelry and valuables and put it with your belongings you’ll be taking with you.
  • Return any cable boxes, modems or other leased electronics equipment.
  • Do last-minute banking. Get cash for movers’ tips and emergency needs.
  • Return anything borrowed – including library books – and pick up anything left hanging out there – including dry cleaning.
  • If someone is taking care of your children or pets during the move, check in with them and be sure all details are set.
  • Back up your computer. Charge your laptop, phone and other devices. And while you’re at it, be sure your chargers don’t get packed.
  • Dispose of all perishable food, opened containers, and anything that could leak. If you’re putting garbage out to the curb for pick-up, make arrangements for a neighbor to retrieve the cans.
  • If you’re taking liquids with you, put them in tightly sealed plastic bags or containers.
  • Remove light bulbs from lamps and lights that will be packed and moved.
  • Drain hoses and anything that might be filled with water.

How to Better Read a Toronto Moving Estimate

June 12, 2017 By Tibor

When reading a moving estimate / moving quote given to you by your Toronto moving company, it’s important that you understand to read it properly, which can also help you select the right Toronto movers for your needs and your budget.

How to Read Moving Estimates - Toronto Movers

  1. How is a moving estimate calculated? – There are several aspects which affect how Toronto moving estimates are calculated, so it’s important to know how your Toronto moving company is comes to their figure. The aspects in question are:
    • Weight
    • Volume
    • Number of rooms
    • Degree of moving difficulty (large or heavy objects)
    • Time and labor required

Watch out for estimates based on weight (usually for long distance moves). Some items – especially pieces of furniture – can be deceptively heavy which means the calculated weight provided in an estimate may fall short of the actual weight confirmed at the licensed weigh station. If so, you will have to pay the extra costs. Comparing the weights offered by competing Toronto movers is very important, with the lightest being probably the least accurate.

  2. Take telephone estimates with a grain of salt – How can a Toronto moving company’s estimate be accurate when no one from that Toronto moving company has seen what has to be moved? Yes, you can get a general idea of what the job entails over the phone, but when weight is a key factor in calculating the cost, you are bound to be off and can forget about an accurate Toronto moving estimate.
  3. Onsite estimate is a key indicator – All reliable Toronto moving companies should send a representative (estimator) to take a look at what and how much needs to be moved. This is the best way for them to assess the weight, required manpower and, ultimately, likely cost. But it’s also a chance for you to meet the moving company and get an indication of the quality of work you would be paying for.Are they knowledgeable, friendly, and positive? Or, are they sketchy on details, distant and unfriendly, and do they speak badly of competitors. Also, did they arrive on time, or were they 30 minutes late and offer a variety of excuses? The estimate process can take about an hour, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to assess the assessor.
  4. Get it all in writing – As with estimates in most other sectors, getting a Toronto moving company estimate in writing is all-important. Once it is written (in the contract) and signed by you and the mover, the company cannot increase the price by any more than 10 per cent regardless of weight or other operational costs. Most reputable Toronto movers will do so as a matter of procedure, and without hesitation. If I had to ask for one, I would then be very unimpressed.
  5. It’s your money so quiz them – While you have them in your home, ask them to clarify some key issues. I’d recommend 6 questions below in particular, though you may have more depending on your situation.
    • Is the estimate binding or non-binding?
    • How long is the estimate valid?
    • Are there additional surcharges? These can include parking problems, road access, street accessibility, delivery time restrictions or if there are any stairs or elevators involved.
    • What is the estimated delivery time and will the driver give you prior notice?
    • What would be the packing policy of the company if you decide to pack yourself?
    • What are the charges for additional weight?
  6. Seek a binding estimate – It’s worthwhile getting a binding estimate, which means the price stated on the written estimate is the price you pay. The risk is if the calculated weight is too high, you’ll end up paying more. But if the calculation is low, you’ll save money.Refusing to agree to a binding price is a little suspicious, firstly because the actual difference paid is rarely very much, and secondly because it may mean that a moving company intends quoting a low weight to secure the contract, then only for the actual weight to push what you pay way up – which is actually fraud.

Useful Tips for Moving with Pets to or from Toronto ON

June 5, 2017 By Tibor

Moving with pets to or from Toronto, ON can interrupt your moving plans. While we all become busy with the usual chores of wrapping and packing our belongings, and organizing a workable moving schedule, a similar level of preparation is needed to move a pet from its familiar surrounds to a new home.

Moving with Pets - Toronto Moving Company

There are specific considerations to keep in mind when moving with pets, to or from Toronto, ON or elsewhere in Canada.

Some Tips for Moving With Pets

Pets don’t like change. In fact, almost every kind of animal has a fear of new surroundings, and it causes them anxiety. So taking a proactive approach and properly preparing your pet for the move is important.

Here are some useful tips to help you.

  1. Prepare the Paperwork – This is especially important when your residential move takes you to a new province in Canada or to a new country. Of course, you should always have your pet’s license, medical records and any other documents in proper order anyway. Be sure to check them and update if necessary before the move.If your dog is due for a rabies shot, get it done. And don’t forget to check the specific legal issues for the province, territory or country you are moving to. Overseas moves will require a Pet Passport for the animal, and there are set immigration laws when bringing animals into the US.
  2. Purchase a Suitable Pet Carrier – It makes sense when traveling long distances by public transport (train or plane) to put your dog, cat or other small animal into a special pet carrier. We recommend placing your pet in a suitably sized carrier. Pet carriers must be large enough for the animal to comfortably lie down, turn around and stand in its natural position.
  3. Prepare Your Pet – When moving with pets, it’s a good idea to prepare them for the ordeal by giving them a bit of practice. Generally speaking, if an animal is not used to travelling in an automobile, then they are likely to get very distressed. So, prior to your move, put your cat, puppy or hamster in its carrier and drive them around. You can pair it with family days to the local park, or to the mountains or local forests, but the important thing is that you show your pet that everything is okay.

If your pet is to travel by plane or train, then consider that they will be stuck in their carrier for several hours from departure to arrival, with the carrier picked up and moved around by strangers. So, try to make their carrier cozy, with their favourite toys and matted with their favourite blanket or pillow to keep them as comfortable as possible.

  4. Show Them Love – Sometimes making a long journey in good time is the priority. In such cases, we can keep our stops to a minimum – but spare a thought for the animal you are bringing with you.Bring some food and water especially for them, and make regular stops where they can get out and stretch their legs. The recommended frequency is once every 2 hours or so. If you are sending your pet via train or an airline, chances are they will be traveling as cargo (though small animals may be permitted to travel with you). Make sure your pet is properly fed and watered before departure and attach a small, accessible water-bottle so your pet can drink when necessary.
  5. Hire Professional Pet Movers – Finally, you may want to take the hassle out of the whole situation and hire professionals to move your pet for you. This can cost a bit but the investment is worth it if for nothing more than the peace of mind that you’ll have.

Some Moving Hacks for moving to or from Toronto ON

May 29, 2017 By Tibor

Moving is one of the most stressful experiences. No matter how many times you’ve moved before, there’s a couple things you’ll always need: a good, reputable Toronto moving company and as much help and advice as you can get.

20 Moving Hacks - Toronto Movers
Here are twenty helpful moving hacks that really work and can make your residential relocation smooth and efficient.

  1. Take photos of the rear hookup panels of your electronics before you disconnect them. Getting reconnected in your new home will be much easier with a photo of what cord goes where.
  2. Use clothing and linens as wrap for breakables. A t-shirt wrapped around a glass dish works as well as costly packing materials. You can also put a pair of rolled up socks inside your glassware. Towels and sheets can also be used as pads inside boxes with breakables.
  3. Use Saran Wrap and Glad Press ‘n Seal for keeping tiny things intact and in their original trays, drawers and display stands – this works particularly well with jewelry.
  4. Place a styrofoam disposable plate between breakable plates, stack them up and box them.
  5. Fill up every container, basket, box and anything with open space. Put your containers to work for you! Fill them with smaller items to space space in moving boxes. Don’t forget about your reusable fabric shopping bags with handles. Filling them up before packing will help to keep your moving boxes organized.
  6. Use suitcases for heavy items such as books. Suitcases can serves as moving boxes. Large suitcases with wheels are particularly helpful for moving heavy items like books.
  7. If you’re DIYing the packing, color code your boxes with brightly colored duct tape. Pink for kitchen, Blue for bedroom, Green for bathroom, etc. Specific contents can be written directly on the tape.
  8. No matter how you color code, label boxes on at least two sides (not the top) so that when they’re stacked, you can see the label.
  9. If you’re moving by yourself, keep your boxes small. You can get free photocopy paper boxes from office supply stores. They have built-in handles and are perfect for small heavy items like books.
  10. Put a cotton ball or cotton pad in your powder or compact cosmetics, such as powder and blush, to keep them from breaking.
  11. Cover the openings of liquid toiletries with Saran Wrap. Take the cap off, cover with the plastic wrap, then put the cap back on. If the lid accidentally pops open during the move, the plastic wrap will prevent spills.
  12. Keep cords from getting tangled mess by first filling a box with toilet paper tubes, upright. Put each cord into its own tube.
  13. Keep hardware together with the disassembled furniture it goes with by putting it in a snack size Ziploc bag and taping it to the largest pieced. Tape remotes to the TVs that they belong to.
  14. If you have more than one bed of the same size, color code your mattress and box springs if you want to keep them in the same bedrooms they had been in before. You won’t be able to tell them apart when they’re brought into your new home.
  15. Save partially full containers of basic cleaning supplies for your moving day cleaning kit. Keep them in a bucket that you don’t mind tossing. After the moving crew leaves, you can clean your house top to bottom and throw away the empty or near empty cleaners.
  16. Unpack the bedroom and your personal bathroom items first. At the end of a long moving day, you’ll want to shower and get to bed without any further heavy lifting.
  17. Make the local library your first stop in your new town. Libraries are a valuable resource for newcomers. Find the community calendar, and the rack of fliers and brochures for classes and programs offered. And don’t forget to get your new library cards.
  18. Stop buying liquids and flammables well before your moving date. Most moving companies won’t take anything flammable and some won’t take any liquids that have been opened. So don’t buy the value sized bottle of cooking oil unless you know you’ll use most of it by moving day.
  19. Avoid cheating. Your moving company has rules for a reason. Don’t sneak something into a box that you know is forbidden. If there’s a mishap, you’ll be responsible for the damages.
  20. Don’t move everything. In particular, outside trash cans, some indoor trash cans, toilet brushes, cleaning rags, and other items that are just unpleasantly “used up” should be tossed and replaced with shiny, brand new items for your new home.
