Moving Hours in Apartment Buildings: What You Need to Know

March 13, 2025 By Rod

Moving Hours in Apartment Buildings: What You Need to Know

Moving into or out of an apartment in Toronto, Ontario, comes with unique challenges, especially when it comes to moving hours in apartment buildings. Unlike houses, apartment buildings often have strict rules about when and how moving can take place. If you don’t follow these rules, you may face delays, fines, or even being denied access to the elevator on moving day.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we specialize in apartment moves throughout Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We understand the importance of scheduling your move during the allowed hours while ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Understanding Moving Hours in Apartment Buildings

Each apartment building has its own regulations about moving hours in apartment buildings. These rules are set by property managers, condo boards, or landlords to minimize disruption for residents. Before scheduling your move, it’s important to know these key factors:

1. Scheduled Moving Time Slots

Most apartment buildings allow moving only during specific hours. The typical moving hours in Toronto apartments are:
✔️ Weekdays: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
✔️ Weekends: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Some buildings may extend or shorten these hours, depending on their policies. Always check with your building’s management in advance.

2. Elevator Reservations

Many apartment buildings require you to book a service elevator in advance. Without an elevator reservation, you may be forced to wait for long periods or even reschedule your move. Some key points to remember:
✔️ Service elevators are usually available on a first-come, first-served basis.
✔️ You may need to pay a refundable security deposit.
✔️ Time slots are often limited to two to four hours per move.

3. Restrictions on Moving After Hours

Moving hours in apartment buildings are strictly enforced. Most buildings do not allow moving late at night or early in the morning to avoid disturbing residents. Moving outside of permitted hours may lead to:
❌ Fines from the building management.
❌ Denial of access to the elevators.
❌ Complaints from neighbors.

4. Parking and Loading Zone Rules

Parking can be a challenge in busy cities like Toronto. Many apartment buildings have designated loading areas for moving trucks. Before moving day, ask about:
✔️ Where the moving truck can park.
✔️ Whether you need a parking permit.
✔️ Time limits for using the loading zone.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we always check with your building management before your moving day to ensure everything is planned properly.

Why Moving Hours in Apartment Buildings Matter

Ignoring moving hours in apartment buildings can cause unnecessary stress. Here’s why sticking to the rules is important:

✔️ Avoids Delays – If you arrive outside of permitted hours, you may not be allowed to move in or out, forcing you to reschedule.
✔️ Prevents Damage to the Building – Many buildings require movers to use protective coverings on walls, floors, and elevators to prevent damage.
✔️ Respects Other Residents – Late-night or early-morning moves can be disruptive, leading to complaints from neighbors.
✔️ Helps with a Smooth Moving Experience – Planning within designated hours ensures you have access to the necessary facilities without interruptions.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we coordinate closely with building managers in Toronto and the GTA to make sure your move follows all the necessary rules.

Tips for Moving in an Apartment Building

1. Contact Your Building Management in Advance

Before moving day, speak with your building’s management to:
✔️ Confirm the allowed moving hours in the apartment building.
✔️ Reserve the elevator and loading dock if needed.
✔️ Get a copy of the building’s moving policies.

2. Book Professional Movers Who Understand Apartment Rules

Hiring experienced movers like Europa Moving and Storage ensures your move is handled efficiently. Our team is familiar with apartment moving regulations in Toronto, Ontario, and we take care of the logistics for you.

3. Plan for Traffic and Parking in Toronto

If you’re moving within Toronto or the GTA, traffic and parking can be challenging. Make sure your movers have a clear plan for:
✔️ The best time to arrive (avoiding rush hours).
✔️ Securing a parking spot for the moving truck.
✔️ Loading and unloading in a designated area.

4. Use Proper Packing Techniques

To make the moving process faster and easier:
✔️ Label all boxes by room for quick unloading.
✔️ Disassemble furniture ahead of time if needed.
✔️ Pack fragile items securely to avoid damage during elevator transport.

5. Be Ready for Your Moving Time Slot

Since moving hours in apartment buildings are often limited, have everything packed and ready to go before your elevator reservation starts. Movers need to work efficiently to stay within the time frame.

How to Move a Pool Table

February 21, 2025 By Rod

How to Move a Pool Table Safely During a Residential Moving

A pool table is one of the heaviest and most challenging pieces of furniture to relocate during a residential move. Its large size, delicate slate surface, and sturdy frame make it essential to follow the right steps to ensure safe transport. Whether you’re moving a pool table within Toronto, Ontario, or across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), careful planning and proper handling will help you avoid damage to both the table and your home.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we specialize in handling heavy and delicate furniture like pool tables, ensuring a stress-free and damage-free relocation.

Step 1: Plan Your Pool Table Move in Advance

A pool table is not just another piece of furniture—it is a complex structure that requires disassembly before transport. Unlike other heavy items, attempting to move it in one piece can lead to serious damage or injury.

Key Considerations Before Moving a Pool Table:

✔ Measure Doorways and Hallways – Ensure that your pool table can be maneuvered safely through your home.
✔ Choose the Best Route – Identify the easiest way to move the disassembled pieces out of your current home and into your new location.
✔ Gather the Right Tools – You’ll need a socket wrench, screwdrivers, a staple remover, moving blankets, and protective padding.

Step 2: Disassemble the Pool Table Before Moving

Trying to move a pool table without taking it apart is not recommended. A standard pool table can weigh between 700 to 1,200 pounds, making it nearly impossible to carry as a single unit. Disassembling it into smaller components makes the move safer and easier.

How to Properly Take Apart a Pool Table:

  1. Remove the Pockets – Use a screwdriver or staple remover to detach the pockets from the table.
  2. Detach the Rails – Unscrew and carefully lift off the side rails.
  3. Take Off the Felt – Gently remove the felt covering. Be careful if you plan to reuse it.
  4. Remove the Slate – This is the heaviest part of the table, often made of solid rock. It requires multiple people or professional movers to lift it safely.
  5. Disassemble the Legs and Frame – Finally, remove the legs and supporting structure.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we have experienced professionals who know exactly how to disassemble, transport, and reassemble your pool table with precision.

Step 3: Protect and Pack Each Component

Once the pool table is disassembled, each part must be properly packed to prevent damage during transport.

Essential Packing Tips:

✔ Wrap the Slate in Moving Blankets – The slate is fragile and prone to cracking, so it should be cushioned and secured.
✔ Use Protective Padding for the Frame and Rails – Cover wooden parts with bubble wrap or thick blankets.
✔ Secure Small Parts in Labeled Bags – Keep screws, bolts, and other small pieces in sealed, labeled plastic bags for easy reassembly.
✔ Store the Felt Separately – If you’re reusing the felt, roll it carefully and store it in a dry, flat container to avoid wrinkles.

Step 4: Transporting the Pool Table to Your New Home

The transportation phase is crucial to ensure that your pool table arrives safely at your new home in Toronto, Ontario, or anywhere across the GTA.

How to Move a Pool Table Safely in a Moving Truck:

✔ Use a Moving Dolly – The slate and frame should be placed on a dolly for easier transport.
✔ Load Heaviest Items First – Place the slate at the back of the truck and secure it against shifting.
✔ Secure All Pieces with Straps – Prevent movement during transit by using heavy-duty straps.
✔ Drive Carefully – Avoid sudden stops or sharp turns that could cause the pool table components to shift.

At Europa Moving and Storage, we use specialized equipment and professional techniques to ensure your pool table is transported safely and securely.

Step 5: Reassembling the Pool Table in Your New Home

Once your pool table has arrived at your new location, reassembling it correctly is just as important as disassembling it.

Steps for Setting Up Your Pool Table Again:

  1. Choose the Right Spot – Ensure your pool table is placed on a level floor with enough space for comfortable gameplay.
  2. Reattach the Frame and Legs – Secure the base structure first.
  3. Install the Slate Carefully – Align the pieces and use a leveling tool to ensure a flat playing surface.
  4. Stretch and Secure the Felt – If reusing the same felt, ensure it is smooth and free of wrinkles before stapling it back in place.
  5. Reattach the Rails and Pockets – Once everything is in place, tighten all screws and bolts securely.

If you need assistance with reassembling your pool table, our experienced movers at Europa Moving and Storage can handle the entire process for you.

Reasons for Getting Storage for Long Distance Moving to or from Toronto

May 3, 2017 By Tibor

For many homeowners looking to move from to or from Toronto, ON or elsewhere in Canada, there can be some tough decisions involved. For example, not everything can be moved at the same time. And even when they can, the distance that needs to be covered can be too far for a non-stop journey to be practical. A lot, therefore, depends on your destination and the schedule you have. There’s a lot of aspects that need attention when moving, and storage offers some flexibility when the move is over long distances taking more than one day.

Toronto Storage Facilities - Moving and Storage Toronto
So what situations could come up that necessitate the use of storage facilities as part of your move? As some of the top Toronto movers, we happen to have experience in this area and prepared some tips for you below.

Reasons You’ll Need Toronto Storage Services

Renting Toronto storage facility can sometimes be a useful option for local moves, but when moving long distances in Canada, it becomes necessary because of the health and safety regulations preventing drivers from staying on the road for too long. Still, the 3 most common reasons for using storage facilities during a long distance move are:

    1. Store to Wait – Generally speaking, whatever you pack will be unpacked at your new place of residence. But there may be some question marks over the space available until you see it for yourself. Your new place may be smaller, so you’re not sure if there will be room for your extensive personal library. Or maybe permanent fixtures in your living room mean the interior dimensions will not accommodate your present suite of furniture. In all the similar cases, you may want to store some of your items until you find a place for them. Once that’s worked out, you can pick them up from your Toronto storage.
    2. Store to Declutter – Sometimes you already know what items are not coming with you on your move, but you have not made a decision yet on how to dispose of them. Perhaps a family member wants your couch, but can’t collect it for a few days. Or maybe you want to sell off your old golf clubs, gym machines and other hobby related items, but it may be necessary to keep them in storage for a few days before getting rid of them at a weekend market or yard sale. Often, homeowners looking to sell will store some items to ensure their home is uncluttered and is looking more attractive to buyers. The storage period can range from a couple of days while the property is open for viewings, or it can be for several weeks if the seller prefers.
    3. Overnight Storage – The most common reason for hiring Toronto storage services is that long-haul journeys take several days. This is pretty logical when you consider the timetable adhered to by your long distance moving company. Toronto to Halifax is over 1,100 miles and will take about 24 hours to drive, while Vancouver is over 2,700 miles away and will take close to 48 hours to drive. While you might opt to make your own way (whether by car, train or plane), with your Toronto moving company moving your items, spending such long hours on the road means that at least one overnight stop will be needed. Having your items stored in Toronto storage facility is a lot better than parking overnight on the street or a truck rest, as getting your items to their new home safely is the priority.

Usually, because these stop-overs are agreed in advance as part of the moving itinerary, the cost of renting overnight Toronto storage facilities is included in the fees for the move. But it’s important to always ask about this and not to simply assume it.

Some Good Tips for Preparing a Plan for Long Distance Moving in Canada

April 17, 2017 By Tibor

When it comes to moving between Canadian provinces, some factors come into play that don’t feature when moving between neighbourhoods within one city. And the importance of preparing in advance is even more obvious when moving long distance to or from Toronto, ON or elsewhere in Canada.

Toronto Moving Company - Long Distance Movers Canada

Other than packing your belongings, what issues may come with moving long distances in Canada? We’ve put together a brief list of tips that can help you get your long distance moving strategy right.

  1. Redistribute The Load – We all like to hold onto things, usually because of the memories they evoke. Your first set of golf clubs, which has lain in the closet for the past decade long usurped by a newer and luckier set. Do you really need it? Consider these 3 simple questions:
    • Do I use it? – If you have not used it in the last 12 months, let it go.
    • Do I need it? – See above, though there may be special circumstances worth considering.
    • Will I wear it? – You’ll hardly need 2 or 3 heavy coats if you’re moving to a warmer climate.

Remember, long distance moves are usually charged by weight rather than by hour, so decreasing the load will save you money. Give to charity, have a yard sale, or even bring items a recycling company.

  2. Get At Least 3 In-Home Moving Estimates – It’s often tempting to get an estimate from only one Toronto moving company and go with it, but it’s wise to have options. It can happen, for example, that your Toronto moving company has to pull out, leaving you stranded.

Without adequate time for finding another moving company to carry out an in-home moving estimate, they’ll ask you to fill out an inventory form. That means an inaccurate assessment, and most likely an unpleasant surprise at the weighing. Getting in-house moving estimates from several Toronto moving companies helps you avoid this nightmare.

  3. Order Home Inspections – Don’t forget to have your new home inspected for any issues. That last thing you need is to arrive at your new home only to find a raft of defects making moving in difficult. This needs to be done about 4 to 6 weeks in advance of your move, to give enough time for issues to be resolved. For more on home inspections, check out CanNACHI, CAHPI, or ASHI.
  4. Know Your Floor Plans – Most properties are advertised in square footage, but that does not necessarily reflect the actual size as it doesn’t take into account some built-in features. For example, a large kitchen might take away from the size of a living room, which means less space for your furniture. Study the floor plans of your new home well in advance of you long distance moving date. That way, you can decide if there is any furniture that can’t fit and you should sell.
  5. Arrange Utilities Early – You’ll still need your phone, electricity and water services until your moving day, but with long distance moves in Canada you need to give yourself plenty of time, and make sure the utilities are working a day or two before you arrive. The phone company might need 3 or 4 weeks to set up working phone lines, while other utilities will need a few weeks notice before swapping the service into your name. In all cases, you may need to pay a deposit before anything happens.
